Walter Cozens, a prominent local builder and keen amateur archaeologist, was instrumental in the founding of the Canterbury Archaeological Society in 1920. The inaugural meeting took place in the (original) Guildhall with the aim “to encourage the study of the history and antiquities of the City of Canterbury and surrounding” [area].
