The Prior's seat is at the east end of the Chapter House (Image 1). It was used by the Prior during chapter meetings. On either side of the Prior were seats for the obedientiaries (the heads of the various departments of the Priory). A chapter of the Rule of St Benedict was read to the monks gathered on the double rows of stone seats and is believed to be the origin of the name Chapter House.
