Period
Early 18th century to start of 19th century
Description
The period saw the classical styles of ancient Greece and Rome brought back by young aristocrats from their European Grand Tours. This prompted the use of proportion and symmetry in plain and elegant buildings. Houses had porticos which, particularly in terraces, were often approached by steps to allow for a basement. Sash windows had thin glazing bars and parapets hid the roof to give a rectangular facade. Leading architects of the period included Robert Adam, Henry Holland and John Soane.
