Italianate Style Architectural Feature

Period

From 1845 to 1890 (approx).

Description & Feature

When Queen Victoria and Prince Albert chose an architectural style for their new private home on the Isle of Weight (Osborne House) they chose the Italianite style.  This reflected the image the English had of an Italian villa:  low pitched roof, overhanging eaves supported by large brackets, towers looking like campaniles, stress on horizontal features in terms of rustication, string courses and window surrounds.  The style was soon imitated by architects and builders across England, who applied it to homes of all sizes.

Local Examples

Canterbury cannot claim to have substantial buildings designed entirely in this style, but some elements of the style are reflected in smaller features of buildings across the city (examples below).
