Moulded bricks

Description

From medieval times to the present day, builders have made use of bricks which differed from standard bricks in size, shape or colour.  They have been termed ‘specials’.  Some specials have been mass produced for particular common uses (turning a corner, bay windows, creating plinths, etc) – these are known as standard specials.  Others have been more bespoke.  Some were apparently created for an individual wall, building, gate, etc.  Local examples shown below are drawn from all periods, from mid-16th century (Roper gate) to modern times (Marlowe Arcade 1985):
