Becket statue in crypt

This wooden statue stands against the north wall of the western crypt.  It is labelled as being a statue of St Thomas, copy of a 15th century original held in the Swedish Museum of National Antiquities, and a gift from the Church of Sweden made in June 1930.

The web site of the Swedish National Museum provides notes on the statue which are misleading in suggesting this may not represent Becket at all.  Museum staff have confirmed that this is poor drafting and will be changed in due course.  They point out that the text in the carved halo clearly indicates that this is Becket.

What to see:

  • a 15th century wooden figure with an interesting past
