Perpendicular style

Period & Description

English version of late Gothic architecture, following on from Norman, Early English and Decorated. Covers period around 1320s to early 1500s.  This is regarded as the most ‘English’ of the three styles.

Characterised by an emphasis on soaring unbroken vertical lines.  Also large windows (set in a grid of vertical and horizontal lines); lierne vaults followed by fan vaults (earlier tierceron vaults are shown under Decorated style); and arches that became ‘four centred’ and flattened.
