Tait, Archbishop (biog)

Archibald Tait (1811-1882) served as Archbishop of Canterbury between 1868 and his death. As he was buried in Addington, the Canterbury memorial is strictly a cenotaph.

What to see:

  • a delicate effigy of alabaster set upon a marble tomb – the life-like, long haired Tait is wearing a rochet (tunic) and chimere (academic gown)
  • the splendidly draped bishop’s sleeves
  • the coloured marble in the tomb and plinth
